San Francisco's Filipino American Block Party is Back
San Francisco comes alive this October as Undiscovered SF returns with its Filipino American Block Party. Set to be a vibrant celebration of Filipino American culture, creativity, and community in honor of Filipino American History Month.
This year’s event spans two venues in the SOMA Pilipinas Cultural District, inviting attendees to explore the commercial corridor, visit local businesses and cultural spaces, and support Filipino small businesses through food, art, and shopping.
San Francisco nonprofit looks to revive a local district with Filipino culture
“First, [we were] trying to carve out space for Filipino entrepreneurs, but now space is not really the issue,” said Danganan. “It’s really about leveraging the activities of the Filipino cultural district. Before, we were just trying to squeeze in, and now, we’re the only ones who want to come in and try to revive the area.”

Amid the piles of golden lumpia and rows of infused cocktails available to the mostly young and mostly tech crowd occupants, resident Desi Danganan was actually giving a heartfelt presentation about Filipino heritage. The occasion was the second installment of Undiscovered, the Filipino night market that brings artists, vendors, food stalls and performances to the neighborhood.

The cultural district aims to stabilize and strengthen a neighborhood in flux. But Filipinos in S.F. have seen their community obliterated before.
